Chapter 1

Rose POV

My heart flips the moment I see him coming towards me; it usually does that whenever I see him.

The beads of water that slid down his hair mean he just freshly got out of the shower.

His attention is deep on his phone, and for a moment my senses remind me to hide.

The stupid things I do when I can't face the man I have been falling for since high school.

He doesn't know yet and he doesn't know I have picked up the job of a cleaner just to be close to him since being pretty and wearing designer clothes doesn't get me anywhere.

And now I'm thinking of hiding. Hiding because it's the old hours of the day, when the cleaners are cleaned by night when they should be home having a good dinner with family, probably me, and seeing me should be weird.

What! I'm doing this to get his attention. Why should I hide?

But that thought wasn't as strong as my willpower.Coward! Echoes in my mind.

My mum taught me to be brave and outspoken, but she has taken away everything I know; instead, she makes me feel small.

I veered towards the side corridor before I could think properly, peeping through.

I watched him walk down the hallway in a graceful motion.

I admired every inch of him from his full eyebrows down to his muscular physique.

I barely got noticed, but I worked so hard too.

This hockey star hardly noticed us, despite my job as a janitor.

For them we are insignificant, but I have this strong zeal; he was going to look my way one day.

Just one day, I held up to that fragile hope like my life depended on it.

Then it dropped; the thumb sounds exploded down the hallway.

He stopped, and he saw me this time.

I must have been carried away staring at his rigid back when I mistakenly kicked the mobbing bucket.

He is looking at me and walking towards me.

His midnight eyes pierced into my soul, seizing up my last breath, and they were filled with questions.

My heart squeezed; it felt like my body was about to jump out of my skin.

“Are you okay?" he asked.Oh God!His voice: I better survive this.

He drew closer, and for a second I wished the ground could open.

Even after a few seconds, I still couldn't come up with a valid excuse for why I was lingering around the corner when all the janitors had already gone home.

I never knew he was so close, and one step was all it took, and I found myself falling.

I feared I might crack my ribs or fracture my ankle, but I fell right into his arms.

My breath flutters.Gosh! My lips are slightly parted when I stare into his beautiful eyes.

Is this really happening? Rose, get hold of yourself!

“You should be careful."

"Umh…yes…right."What in God's name am I even saying?

“I mean. Thank you."He nods.

“Why are you still around? I thought every janitor had gone."

"Umh", I tried to make out an excuse to save my *ss, but my brain betrayed me.

How could I tell him I came to watch him practise and I'm his biggest fan?

Other teams walked in, distracting us for a moment.

There is an exchange of greetings and pleasantries making me again feel small and insignificant.

His attention is diverted.I tried to walk away, but he stopped me.

“Do you mind if I drop you off?” He asked.

“Umh…no… I will manage," the words slipped out even before I could take it back.

“But it's late."

“Ok, fine."I didn't know it then, but that awkward fall would be the beginning of something beautiful.

Jack Maddox.

I supported him throughout his career in every little way I could, and he is on his way to the championship with his team.

“Hey, thank you. My husband got the email saying he has a press conference by tomorrow,"

I say over the phone with so much excitement bubbling in my chest.

I'm on the veranda while my husband is having his shower. It will take approximately a few minutes for him to be out, and by that time I will be done with the call.

I hate it when I hide this from him, but I have no choice.

“I did it for you, and you owe me." I chuckled, my hand playing over the railing, watching the skyline of the city.

“I owe you a bunch."

“You will always be a sweet girl. " I chuckled again, turning around towards the door when I saw a shadow; just in a second it vanished.

Someone is watching me or perhaps has been listening to my conversation.

“Hey, I will call you back; I have a situation."

“Is something wrong?” I didn't answer before I pressed the button, turning back into the room.

Jack was on the bed, the dovey tucked to his chest.

I swallowed hard; I thought he was in the bedroom.

He doesn't even look at me, so I walked to the other side of the bed, trying hard not to think he heard my conversation, pretending to apply cream on my skin just to have his questions, but it didn't come.

“Babe, are you okay?”His tone is simple and dismissive.

"Yes," that's unlike him; he usually plants a kiss on my forehead before we sleep, and this night there was none.

I tried to make small talk, but he backs away, showing no interest in whatever I have to say.

I swallowed and settled into my side when my phone buzzed.

I cursed silently. He should know the drill of not calling me when I'm with my husband, and then I glance at my husband before taking the phone.

He didn't move; it felt like he was fast asleep.I read the message, thinking it's from Alex.

It wasn't him; it was from an unknown number, and the message got my fingers trembling.‘You think Jack doesn't know the truth.'Then another pops.‘Ask him what happened three months ago.'

"Three months ago," I murmured. What actually happened three months ago?

At the other end, Jack couldn't stop being in thought.

Did I have to believe Cassandra?

He keeps asking himself over and over again.

It is not like he hasn't noticed his wife being distant to answer a call, and when he comes around, she gets startled like she's hiding something; he had intentionally dismissed it as nothing.

Then the expensive gifts he turned blind eyes on, the gold and diamond he usually sees in her bag when Rose is not watching.

Does it explain? Even though I love my wife so desperately, I just can't come to terms with the fact that she has a richer guy than me.

Is she cheating on me? But I couldn't confront her because I wanted her to tell me herself.

The earlier message from Cassandra. She saw my wife again with the same man.

I dismissed it but quickly replied to her that I needed evidence.

But she didn't have one, so I didn't believe her, and this wasn't her first time telling me this.

After games she tucked closer to me again to tell me about my wife.

For months she had dropped small comments, never enough to prove anything but always enough to leave a question behind.

When I asked her why she was telling me all these?

She said she was just looking out for me.But I don't believe her.

No, I don't.Then in her message earlier, I dismissed it again like rumours; she didn't know much about my wife, and the allegations on her were so sensitive.

So again I ignored it, but then I stopped to think when I heard Rose on the veranda.

She didn't know I was there, but I listened.

Enough to shatter the little trust.

Could it be that Cassandra has been saying the truth all these whiles?

But I didn't believe her.The truth about my life.

But tonight, I heard something for the first time with my own ears.

“I did it for you, and you owe me," rang in my head.

Who was Rose talking to?

Chapter 2

Rose POV

The camera clicked, almost blinding my eyes at the press conference. I clutched my stomach tightly, smiling inwardly, imagining the big smile on his face when he gets to hear the wonderful news.

Since we're in the celebration mood, it's perfect. I announced to him about the news, though I wanted to wait till our wedding anniversary, which is four days from now. Our eyes met.He smiled and I smiled back then his expression changed.

His smile fades, his eyes goes to my phone.

Then it buzzed.

I'm sure he can't see it from a distance.

The cheer dies down then his voice filled in. There is absolute quietness except for the clicking of the camera from the media.

“ This achievement goes to someone special and dear to my heart, I couldn't have done this without her encouragement and her efforts. I want to thank my wife for being more than my cheerleader, for being my backbone and my biggest supporter thr
